You’ll drive through the Great Rift Valley, set up camp in the bush, and enjoy multiple game drives in one of Africa’s most iconic wildlife areas. This itinerary is similar to many Kenya safari packages sold by top travel agencies: it includes all meals (full board), park entry fees, experienced guide, and transport, but skips extras like tips, drinks, or park taxes. By choosing a group budget safari, you save by sharing a vehicle and sleeping in tents. Remember to check Kenya visa requirements and pack for cooler mornings and hot days.
Depart Nairobi at dawn (around 6:00 AM) in a shared safari van. Drive southwest along the Great Rift Valley, stopping mid-morning at a lookout over the valley lakes for photos. In about 5–6 hours total travel time you’ll reach the Maasai Mara gate. Complete entry formalities and meet your crew. Have a picnic lunch at the camp site. After lunch and a short rest, head out around 3:00 PM for your first game drive. This afternoon drive may take you toward the Mara River or lakes. Look for elephants, buffalo, zebra, impala and if lucky, lions or leopards. The Mara is famed for its large elephant herds and prides of big cats. After sunset, return to the budget camp (for example, Maji Moto Maasai Cultural Camp or a simple wilderness camp). Enjoy a hot dinner (stew, rice/ugali, vegetables) and sit by the fire under the stars
Rise early for coffee/tea, then an early morning game drive (around 6:00 AM departure). Morning is great for spotting predators (lions at dawn) and active wildlife. Return mid-morning to camp for a hearty breakfast of eggs, pancakes, or porridge. Then set out again after breakfast for a full-day game drive. Your guide will explore other parts of the reserve, possibly heading north to the Mara Triangle or south towards the Talek River (game sightings can vary). Spot giraffe, warthog, hyena, and occasionally cheetah scanning for prey. Enjoy a packed picnic lunch in the bush near wildlife (often arranged by your camp). In the afternoon, you might visit the famous Mara River crossing (best July–Oct) to see hippos, crocodiles, and the edge of a migrating herd. Late afternoon, return to camp. Optionally, visit a Maasai village (small entrance fee or donation) to learn about village life, traditional dancing, and beadwork. End the day with dinner and Maasai stories by the fire.
Be up before dawn for a sunrise game drive (around 5:45 AM). Predators are very active at first light, so watch quietly for lions, hyenas, or cheetahs on the move. Enjoy the Mara’s golden glow over acacia trees. Return to camp by 8:00 AM for breakfast and to pack up your tent. Check out of camp by 9:00 AM and begin the journey back to Nairobi. Drive through Loita Hills with one mid-way lunch stop. Arrive back in Nairobi in the late afternoon (around 4:00–5:00 PM). The safari ends after drop-off at your Nairobi hotel or the airport.
